Smart Communications, Inc. has just launched the Philippines’ first prepaid LTE service for mobile phones, making 4G accessible to a wider market segment. The telco launched its first commercial LTE services last year with data connectivity speeds of up to 42Mbps available to postpaid and broadband subscribers. Last April, the company announced the availability of the first prepaid LTE SIMs for broadband devices such as dongles and tablets.

For starters, LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the next step ahead of 3G as it enables mobile internet download speeds of up to 100MBps. However, Smart’s LTE service is limited to 42MBps for the meantime.  With that kind of speed, Smart said that you’ll be able to “download movies in minutes, full album in seconds, and real-time gaming no lag”.

If you are currently using an iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia V, Nokia Lumia 920, Huawei Ascend D1, ZTE T82, or any other LTE-capable smartphone which functions on the same LTE band of Smart’s network, then it is definitely wise to grab a prepaid LTE SIM that are now available at select Smart Stores and various telco “tiangges” in key cities nationwide. Exisiting Smart subscribers can also upgrade their non-LTE SIM cards by purchasing an LTE SIM at Smart Stores to retain their mobile number.

Smart’s prepaid LTE packages or buckets consist of a one-day offer for PhP 50, week-long (7 days) package for PhP 299, and a 30-day package for PhP 995. These can be availed by simply texting LTE 50, LTE 299, or LTE 995 to 2200. These bundles offer unlimited LTE browsing.

  1. Right now I am more inclined to get an extra phone for a more reliable network. I have heard a lot of positive reviews about the network. I will sure get one when I have a LTE capable sim.
