2016 Nike Black History Month Collection of 2016.

Selena Williams Nike

Tennis Superstar Serena Williams’s perpetual drive to trump expectations, break records and redefine a sport. Kobe Bryant’s phenomenal 81-point game for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2006. Sanya Richards-Ross’ gold-medal-winning 400-meter race. Chris Paul’s off-court drive to level the playing field. These pivotal performances and seminal individuals rewrote history and catalyzed community — they also serve as the driving inspiration behind the 2016 Black History Month collection.

Kobe Bryant Nike

Since its debut in 2005, Nike’s annual Nike Black History Month collection has evolved from a single Nike Air Force 1 to an extensive product assortment that pays homage to the achievements of black athletes worldwide. The limited-edition 2016 collection, with staggered launches running from January to mid-February, features a vibrant cascade of 28 products, spanning tennis, basketball, football, running, Nike iD and Jordan Brand. Its distinctly global sensibility is reflected in a vivid Pan African-inspired color palette, with custom geometric motifs.

Nike Black History Month Shoes

The collection kicks off with Basketball footwear releases including the LEBRON 13KD8KYRIE 2 and the KOBE 11. Signature models from Lebron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant will also be offered in youth sizes. Other category launches include: Air Force 1, Nike Air Footscape Magista and Nike Roshe One (including an additional BHM-themed Roshe One Nike iD offering) from Nike Sportswear; NikeCourt Flare footwear from Tennis; Streak LT 3 footwear from Running; and the Air Jordan 1 Nouveau and AJ1 High for girls from Jordan Brand. A BHM-themed Magista Obra FGboot and Jordan Spike 40 follow in February. BHM apparel comprises hoodies, T-shirts and shorts.

The Black History Month collection honors and celebrates Black heritage, in sport and beyond, around the world while also providing financial support to Nike’s Ever Higher Fund, which was created to bring mentorship, sport and all of its benefits to African American youth.

Nike is proud to support numerous national and local organizations that provide services to underrepresented youth, including African American youth, during the year, through community development, coaching, city league sport programs, and early childhood development programs. Long-time partners include the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Boys and Girls Clubs, National Head Start and Coach Across America.

Kobe 11, finally unveils

unnamed (2)

At first glance, the low-top and simplified silhouette appears familiar. One could be fooled into believing that they’ve seen this before. Wrong. Look closer. See those pearlescent fibers? Those are thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) threads, an indication of progression; and, despite their subtlety, an announcement of the arrival of an evolution, a stronger iteration of Nike Flyknit.

unnamed (1)

Fittingly, this progressive technology debuts on the KOBE 11, underscoring the dedication to innovation that has cemented Kobe Bryant’s design legacy, one that rivals, if not extends, the champion’s on-court perfectionism.

Starting in 2004 with the Nike Huarache 2K4, Bryant’s signature line – a partnership between the legendary athlete and Nike designer Eric Avar – has repeatedly introduced technical breakthroughs to basketball, including Flywire, Nike Free-inspired natural motion, advanced proprioception and Flyknit. At the same time, it has consistently championed a less-is-more philosophy. The union of these values has radically altered expectations for performance basketball footwear, a practice that continues with the KOBE 11, Bryant’s final on-court shoe.

Known to be invulnerable in all of his body except for his heel, Achilles’ ultimate demise resulted from an arrow to his weak point during the Trojan War. Consequently, the term “Achilles heel,” was born.  The KOBE 11 Achilles Heel features a graphic representation of the hero on the right heel, while the left features four-stitch marks representing the four feet of thread used in Bryant’s 2013 Achilles surgery.

Limited Edition: 2015 Nike MAG Shoes

nike

Almost 30 years ago, Nike was asked to collaborate on a movie that would feature scenes set in the futuristic world of 2015. The brand was challenged to imagine sneakers that would suit the inhabitants of the advanced era. The innovation team, which regularly looks into a crystal ball of athlete insight and technology to project the future of sport, took that task further.

The resulting Nike Mag reinvented the conventional lacing system, integrating it into an inimitable design that became an enduring beacon of popular culture. As Nike, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker put it, “We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes.”

nike back to the future

Today, Nike delivered a gift to Michael J. Fox introducing the innovation to the shoe’s first, and most celebrated, wearer.

This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s “power laces,” combining the archetype invention with digital technology. The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support. But this is just the first iteration.

Nike continues to test this technology across multiple sports, incorporating feedback into future game-changing footwear with unprecedented performance features that have the potential to impact athletes around the world.

“By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner,” added Parker.

Availability

The 2015 Nike Mag is a limited edition release. It will only be available via auction, with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The specific details on the auctions will be posted to Nike News and via Twitter @Nike in spring 2016.

Sizes: Men’s US 7 to 13

How much does it weigh? The new technology only adds approximately 2oz to the shoe.
